As the films were released individually to DVD, each came with a bevy of extras attached. Behind-the-scenes looks into production gave some insight into the hows and whys of the creative process. Commentary with the filmmakers shed some light onto how specific decisions were made and how these choices effected the films as a whole. The inclusion of the Academy Award winning short film, Tin Toy, gave an insightful look into the inspiration for the Toy Story films, and unintentionally helped show the amazing progress made by computer animation between the years of 1988 and 1995. But despite all of these features and extras, there was something missing.
There needed to be some way to digest the Toy Story franchise as a whole; to see how the sequel played off the original and how the story was planned to develop further almost from the very beginning. Well, that need has been met with the release of the Toy Story: Ultimate Toy Box.
The Toy Box not only includes the two feature films, complete with all of their original extras, but also contains a third disc. This supplemental disc is exclusive only to this set and contains a more interactive version of both movies extras. In this format, you can easily move back and forth between the two films extras to make comparisons or witness designer's changes in direction or approach. Of course there is plenty of new material on this disc as well; not just a rehash of the original extras.
Delve into the history of the entire Toy Story project, and learn what obstacles had to be overcome before the films could even be attempted. See the original treatments and storyboards laying out the film before animators could begin their work, and while your at it, take a look at some background info on many of those same animators. Learn what defined Pixar as a studio and enabled them to undergo the first full length feature CG film.
Take a virtual tour through the design process of not only the characters, but also their surroundings and the film's backdrop. See how each and every character evolved through changes in appearance as well as coloration and even names. Go step by step through the process of an animated scene, starting with wire frame models and eventually working through may layers to the texturing and shading...it is much more complicated than the average layman could imagine. And of course, what disc of extras would be complete without the requisite deleted scenes?
And that is just the beginning.... There is hours of entertaining and informative exploration contained on the Supplemental Features disc, just waiting for you; but remember you can only get this spectacular disc in the Toy Story: Ultimate Toy Box set. If you have ever considered yourself a fan of Toy Story, Disney, or computer graphics in general, this is simply a must have set. And if you already own a copy of either of the two feature films included here, buy this set anyway...you can sell your other copies later on EBAY for big bucks when they are stuck in moratorium!!
