For the most part the amount of true puzzle games for the PS2 has been few and far between. Games like Fantavision, The Adventures of Cookie and Cream, and Super Bust-a-Move have really been the only fare to tide over gamers that are fans of the genre. Finally however, the granddaddy of all puzzle games is back. Tetris Worlds for the PS2 takes gamers back to those classic days and adds something new.

By now, just about everyone is familiar with the concept of Tetris: use the seven different shapes, called Tetriminos, to build lines. As you eliminate lines, the farther you’ll progress, and of course the faster the game will become. It’s quite a simple, and addictive theme, and anyone can figure out how to play them game. However, this is your ‘classic’ version of the game. Tetris Worlds features six modes of play, including the classic format.

Square Tetris – the objective here is to not only play Tetris, but also combine the shapes properly to form a square to earn a bonus.

Cascade Tetris – In this version, loose pieces from adjacent lines fall to clear more lines.

Sticky Tetris – The bottom of the screen is filled with garbage blocks, which build higher with each level. The objective of the player is to clear these blocks to progress.

Hot-Line Tetris – This alternation features lines throughout the playing grid. The object is to place the tetriminos in a fashion that will clear these lines.

Fusion Tetris – The final version of Tetris has an atomic block in the bottom corner of the matrix. Players must line the shapes up to detonate this atom to advance.

Tetris Worlds also features a multi-player mode that can become complete chaos. It’s basically the same as previous two player’s versions of Tetris. The more lines you clear, the more blocks will appear on your opponents’ grid, making life a nightmare. Of course, in order to have the option of playing four players, you’ll need a multi tap and four friends if you have them. All versions of Tetris are playable in multi-player mode.

Aside from the arcade mode and multi-player, there is also a story mode. Sure, it sounds like a really bad idea, but in actuality, this may in fact be the best part of the game. The story itself isn’t too important, and it’s really all about the different 3-D backgrounds. As players advance through the various stages, the backgrounds change and evolve. You have various Minos to choose from and you can also evolve them as well as alter their appearance. Really, this version is nothing more than the eye candy version, but it’s definitely more interesting than the arcade version.

Overall, Tetris Worlds with all its variations is quite a solid game. It’s as addictive as it ever was and with the addition of the new versions and the multi-player mode, this makes it one of the best Tetris games to hit the market in the past few years. This is definitely a title to have if you’re a fan of the puzzle genre or just want some sort of party title to have sitting around for unexpected guests.
