Qore Vol. 2 (July 2008)
2008
Published by: Sony Computer Entertainment of America

Qore, Sony’s new digital magazine, started bringing PlayStation 3 owners all the inside dirt on the latest upcoming games. June found a good, long look at the much anticipated SOCOM and with a number of big games on coming for the holidays, there is still plenty more to take in.

Resistance 2

Arguably on the biggest games that is coming this holiday season, Resistance 2 promises to be bigger, bolder, and flashier than the original and no one can really argue with that. While this isn’t a game that I would consider to be a system mover since the original was released exclusively to the PlayStation 3, fans of the original will get all the dirt on what to look forward to with the highly anticipated sequel.

Long Road to Victory – Veronica takes us behind the scenes to get just a taste of what’s in store. What we learn is in part no surprise as Hale returns to the series starting right where we left off in the original. Fast forward two years later and the battlefield in now on the United States soil. While the developers won’t tell us much more than this, they are more than happy to show us the game to come and tease us just a bit with a scant few details on the new co-op mode and the multiplayer mode which now features up to 60 players on one map.

All Suited Up – We’ve all heard the term motion capture or mo-cap, and while we all know what it does, we don’t always get the change to see what goes on behind-the-scenes in video games, at least not until now. Plus, Veronica gets a taste of what being a mo-cap actor is all about.

WTF Tech: InterSense – Resistance has the bragging rights as being the first video game to utilize some of the same movie magic as some of Hollywood’s biggest films and we’ll get a brief look at a technology that appears to be on the cutting edge of changing the way we see video game cutscenes.

New and Improved – Will Resistance 2 be better than the original? While that remains to be seen, the comparison between the original game and the sequel will prove that in fact, the game looks more amazing than we could have hoped and no amount of screenshots can capture what seeing a bit of gameplay can show us.

Gallery de Resistance – Here you will find images ranging from conceptual drawings to what I would imagine are actual in game images and it’s more than enough to make any fan drool with anticipation.

Resistance Theme – To show your support for the cause, Sony has included an exclusive theme from Resistance where the only missing element is a counter ticking down the days to release.

Silent Hill: Homecoming

Many have tried to get into the survival horror market, but only a handful have managed to be victorious. The biggest three titles in the genre are Resident Evil, Fatal Frame, and Konami’s Silent Hill . . . and of the two names that were transformed into feature films, only one was good. Silent Hill is waiting for you to come back once again, though this will not be a game developed by Team Silent but instead, The Collective, Inc. and Foundation 9 Entertainment, but can the two studios deliver the same chills?

Inside Silent Hill – The developers give us a peak at the latest Silent Hill and just from the initial scenes, any doubts you might have had in regards to someone other than Team Silent handling the duties should be resolved. Silent Hill: Homecoming looks just as good as the other games in the series and seems to capture the same tense atmosphere as well as the nightmarish settings and monsters.

Creepin’ It Real – Never send a horror amateur to do a professionals work. If you’re one that scares easily, seeing Veronica’s reaction to the game will either have your heart racing waiting to be scared or have you looking for the light switch while you play. While I’m sure anyone here will remain unaffected, Veronica apparently is in a little too deep in this world or horror.

Fright Gallery – The sojourn to Silent Hill concludes with an artwork presentation that will be more than enough to give the uninitiated night terrors for some time to come.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm

If you’re not familiar with Naruto, you probably know nothing about anime. It’s one of the hottest titles on the market today and has had a number of games released in the past few years. Naruto however is about to leap into the next generation market . . . believe it!

Behind the Academy – The localization team gives us an insider’s look at what seems to be one of the most promising anime titles to come to video game consoles yet. You’ll get more information on the innovative cel shading that has transformed Naruto from 2D anime to 3D video game, and even as someone who isn’t a fan of the series, I have to admit that it looks astounding.

Anime Instinct – Naruto has had a number of video game adventures and with the ninja storm ready to be unleashed, it’s time for a look at how the game has been improved, what’s different, and what’s brand new.

Ninja Yearbook – While it’s not exactly class photos, you will get a chance to view artwork from the upcoming game.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm demo – Even if the other games haven’t impressed you, I can guarantee that this one will. The demo is short but it will give you an excellent taste of what’s to come when Naruto is unleashed on the PlayStation 3

Sports

I’m not someone who is really that impressed with sports titles unless it doesn’t involve any type of real team aspect. If you can’t figure it out, that breaks down to any organized sport such as baseball, football, hockey and the like holds no interest, but if there’s a skateboard, vehicle, or anything like that, I’m definitely onboard. I’ve never been into the Madden series, but even I have to admit that EA has done a rather impressive job with their latest in the franchise.

For the Love of the Game – You’ll not only get a look at the upcoming Madden which is celebrating 20 years but a glimpse at what the developers have done to improve their game. Their prediction is what you see here is the future of broadcast sports and if that’s the case, I might actually be tuning in from time to time.

Through the Years – Now that the game has turned twenty, it’s time for a look back at the different covers that have graced the Madden series, and they haven’t always been him.

What’s Hot

In this case, it’s Hellboy II. If you haven’t already seen the trailer you’ll get the opportunity to view it in high definition glory, not to mention a collection of stills from the movie.

Download Center

The already mentioned Resistance 2 theme as well as the Naruto demo are both found here. Also included is a free download of Calling All Cars; something that’s great if this is your first “issue” of Qore, disappointing if you’ve already paid your subscription, and downright frustrating if you bought it back when it was released.

Overall, this issue isn’t bad, and Resistance is definitely the high point, but I’d really like to see Qore starting including a bit more in terms of the free game that is included instead of giving us the same thing again.
