Platform: Xbox, PlayStation 2, PC Genre: Action Number of Players: 1 At some point, we really need to have a "chat" with some of the current producers of video games. Sometimes, and believe me, nowadays, it’s pretty rare to even play a game that feels like something new. It’s always the same old stuff. The whole, "let’s run around and kill everyone" thing is a little blown out of proportion. We, as a people, and by people, I mean gamers, need a new experience. We need something fresh, something that actually excites you. Remember the first time you played Resident Evil on PS One? I’ve had the opportunity to play this game, Mafia, and frankly, I was unimpressed. I felt that it was boring from the start. The only remotely interesting thing about this game was the story, and as you can see from the title, is something that could really use some rest. You can really only tell so many mobster stories before they become absolutely ridiculous. To be completely honest, this game isn’t much more than a "throwback" of GTA 3 or Vice City, and even that is giving it too much credit. It’s different when you take an idea for a game that already exists, change the time in which it happened, change character names, and make it better. But, when it is miserably worse, you then have a nightmare on your hands. Mafia has the same basic structure as the GTA series. You have your opening scenes, and there you go. You are let loose to complete missions for gangsters, steal cars, kill people, you get the idea. I suppose that it is technically a "third-person", slash "RPG", slash shooter, but unfortunately, the "view" isn’t pretty. The action is terribly sluggish, and the graphics are far less than enticing. Not only is the shooting mode slow paced, but the driving is worse. Now keep in mind that the game is set in the 1920’s, but unfortunately, even if the cars could drive faster than 15 miles per hour, the driving portions of each mission would still lack originality. The story begins with your character, a taxi cab driver, having a quick smoke break from his normal sniffing for fares. He hears gunshots, and moments later two individuals come sprawling out of an alleyway. One is wounded. They force you to be their temporary get away driver, and now we begin the first mission. In case you couldn’t figure it out already, you have to lose the guys chasing your new "fares". If you can pass the first level, in which case your dog or baby brother could do it sleeping, then you can live the dream. You get to drive around and play as a taxi driver. Cool. Sweet. Are you guys serious? I have played one other game from the developers Gathering and Illusion, and it wasn’t very good either. Very dry, very monotonous. To sum things up here, this game isn't very good at all. I wouldn’t buy it for more than 5 bucks, and I’d rather buy a cheeseburger meal. It will get very old, very fast, and it only gets more and more frustrating to play. Trust me, go buy Dues Ex: Invisible War. Peace. -jeremy- |
