Golf has a “hole”
new perspective in the world of console gaming… Outlaw Golf.
Outlaw Golf (by Simon & Schuster Interactive) really sets a new
standard for golf games of the future. It incorporates the zany ideas of
games like Hot Shots with the “knock-down”, “drag-out” violence
one may find in games like NHL Hitz.
Oh
but that’s not all… for those of you who enjoy the mature
themes, Outlaw Golf incorporates a variety of scantily clad woman
of various exotic occupations to win you over. Now for me it seems
as though they may be pushing the limit here with Mistress Suki (a
very voluptuous dominatrix) and her overweight masked man-servant/caddy
Puddin, or maybe it’s Summer the “spank-happy” stripper
and her caddy (fellow stripper) Autumn. Either way it is quite clear
why this game did not make the “Everyone” rating by ESRB.
I personally grew quite fond of the ex-Irish soccer hooligan Scrummy
O’Dool, and his caddy Johnny Rotten, who when first picked in
the player option screen start head banging to some awesome Irish
punk and set the mood for the game to come.
Not
only does Outlaw Golf have a very unique cast of characters to entertain
you for hours of single or multiplayer gaming, but it also has amazingly
user friendly controls which makes driving a 250 yard tee-off or sinking
a 20 foot putt like riding a tricycle. The only difficult thing about
the controls that I have discovered, is trying to do the power swing.
It involves pushing down on the joystick (which is a button as well)
and pushing forward very quickly and STRAIGHT (emphasis on straight…
because this is the difficult part). Even with the difficulty in accomplishing
the power swing, your most novice of users can pick up the controls
very quick and prove to be quite the challenger, even for a person
who has been playing for months (believe me… my wife has taken
me to the bank in several skins games).
Single
Player offers a wide array of golf games to choose, from your typical
18 hole single round tournament to a more uplifting (and wallet bulging)
18 hole skins game. Working one's way through the single player "Tour
Mode" will let you experience these various games and unlock
all the different players. One thing to be especially cautious about
is the "Composure" meter. This meter goes up and down according
to how well you are playing. The worse you play, the worse your composure
gets... and vice versa. One of my favorite ways to regain composure
is utilizing a "Beating Token", this will allow you to take
out your humiliation on your caddy, performing combinations of punches,
kicks, and slams. Very exhilarating!
Despite
one minor flaw in the game engine (a flaw I like to call the “disappearing
tree”) where one’s ball may land in what appears to be
a wide open space only to find out that when you take your swing it
comes right back at you after bouncing off some invisible force field,
that later appears as a gigantic oak tree in your line of sight to
the hole. Apparently the engine is set up to fade anything prohibiting
your sight around the ball, which is good but can prove to be detrimental
as well (like in previous scenario). But as I was saying… despite
this one minor flaw it is very smooth and realistic especially when
it comes to the way the ball follows the topography of the course,
or bounces off of various surfaces (trees, rough grass, sand and trailers?).
I can definitely foresee this game being one I relive time after time
with friends, beating our caddies and driving golf balls like mad
men (um… or women).
