Couple Book 2

Couple is a romance story from the male’s point of view.  It could easily be passed up by some who might readily categorize it as a romance novel or shoujo, but that would be a big mistake!  This Korean manhwa is a story that young men will easily relate to, and although there is a romantic nature to these stories, guys will laugh their asses off reading about young Ho Han’s exploits as he tries to trick his roommate Yu Mi Yu into dating him.  Romance is a universal thing, and a worthy topic for storytelling, but as this Couple illustrates, most guys really don’t know what to do to get the girl.

In the first book, a college student Young Ho Han was moving into his new apartment, when he noticed an attractive girl, named Yu Mi Yu, who didn’t have her rent money and was getting kicked out of the building.  He minds his own business at first, but when he finds the girl out on the streets in the rain.  He takes her in and they eventually come up with the notion of becoming roommates.  Young Ho assumes that this will mean more than just a platonic relationship, but he quickly finds out that Yu Mi is not as naïve and helpless as she seems.

Book two of Couple continues the saga of Young Ho and Yu Mi.  It begins by introducing a new character to the mix, Yu Mi’s tutoring student, Heesu Suh.  This troubled young girl is about to cause lots of trouble for the two roommates.  After Heesu steals Yu Mi’s panties, Young Ho accidentally sees her “most intimate place.”  This creates awkwardness between the roommates, and further hinders Yong Ho’s attempts to start a relationship with Yu Mi.  Young Ho must control his lustful desires, and work hard to keep his living situation a secret from his friends, but it seems that Yu Mi may never see Young Ho as more than a brother figure.

This book has tons of humorous situations involving the sexual mishaps of a young guy.  It’s on par with the American Pie movies, in that regard, revealing how perverted and ridiculous a young man’s life can be.  The mishaps Young Ho suffers are often coincidental misunderstandings, but his own lustful desires are often the cause of the embarrassing situations that he finds himself in.

I really like the look and feel of this series.  The art is pleasant with smooth transitions from realistic to comical styles, which illustrate the mood of the story.  It really is funny, and guys may cringe with empathy in those wacky situations that young Ho gets himself into.

Couple is a fun look into the essence of a relationship, and how people of different sexes may interpret the interactions that occur between them.  It’s a worthwhile read and I am highly recommending the series to anyone mature enough to handle it.  Bear in mind though that like in teen-sex-comedies, there are some incidences of nudity, and adult situations that a younger audience might not be quite ready for yet.  This is the series that could really establish a manhwa following in the U.S.
