I don’t like boys with long hair in anime. I do not have the talent nor the skill to easily determine the gender when everyone has long hair. The first time I watched Rurouni Kenshin I thought he was a she for the first few episodes. This is one of those mangas. Not only did I have to wonder about gender but people die and get new souls in them. I am easily confused.

It starts out with 2 people walking through a cursed field. A robber appears, oh noes! When another guy appears out of no where, and fights the first robber. He loses and then joins the 2 traveling ones. Why? Because it was a joke and he is really a samurai. Okay cool. Then a chick appears and lops off the robbers head, and then the guy who I thought was a girl until a few pages ago. The remaining guy has to carry the dead body of the samurai robber. Okay now things are getting freaky. Turns out that an old lord needs a new body to put his son’s soul into to regain his families lost power. Why he has the power to do such a thing is not really explained, nor inferred, but no character questions it so neither did I.

This style is very gothic, dark and moody. It has great detail, and the character designs, beside the long hair, are very distinguishable. They use some really great styles and effects. One is the use of fog. It just looks freaking cool. It got a little awkward for me when the pieced together person came back to life, but like I said before I am easily confused.

If you can get past the dude looks like a lady phase the story as far fetched as it is, is quite good. The way that the characters interact can be stiff at times, but it is passable when you think of the story in its traditional setting. One thing I can’t get over is the abrupt changes that take place in the story. The fact that important plot pieces are added in without any forewarning is a little unsettling.

If dealing with souls, dismemberment, and disembodied spirits is your bag, pick up this sleeper. Dark and moody this is defiantly not for the feint of heart. This one is perfect for a midnight reading on Halloween.
