Slayers Special: Spellbound

Slayers s is a collection of chapters.  For the most part, each chapter is an individual story. Each chapter is a few pages, almost as if they were done as annuals for a magazine, and then collected here. If you have read slayers in the past and liked them, then go forth and purchase this manga, because this is more of what you love.

High on the fantasy scale is this manga. We follow Lina Inverse as she travels with Naga her rival. This being my first real sit-down time with anything slayers related, and I’m not counting the random episode I once saw on the international channel when I was 14, I am impressed. They really do a good job with their portal of magic. They keep it light and humors, not getting boged down with the how and why. It is just there, and they know how to use it. That’s all you really need to know and they leave it at that.

The jokes in this series are of slapstick, caricature nature. One of the running jokes later in the manga is that assassins looking for Nagi keep attacking her rival, and her sometimes traveling partner, Lina Inverse. They stop when they realize that they are attacking the wrong person. Most noticeably because of her bust size, or lack there of.

This manga is good for both new and returning fans of the slayer series. The first few pages are character profiles detailing Lina inverse and her rival Naga. This is a great resource for those new to the series and those of us who could use a little refresher. It provides enough back story so that new readers won’t be lost, but not so much as to confuse them.

I read this entire manga while I was waiting in line. It’s a perfect book to pull out when you are waiting in line at the bank, or waiting for a bus. The size of the chapters are perfect for when you need a little something to do.  It’s a great diversion when waiting in those horrendous store lines, or you are waiting to meet a friend.

Light and airy slayers is a great diversion. Taken in doses it’s a fun and bouncy (yes I like puns, so sue me) diversion.  Perfect to pull out in those times of boredom, slayers will stay in your backpack, waiting for its time to shine.
