The one thing I’ve noticed, or haven’t noticed rather, while playing any game from the Biohazard series is the music. It’s not that the music in the games are bad or anything to that extent at all. The music just blends in so incredibly well to create atmosphere that most of the time it’s just a part of the action. In all honesty, it’s quite a rare thing when a series and its composure can create something like that. Biohazard 3: Last Escape offers gamers a chance to hear the music without all the distractions associated with the game. There’s no fear of zombies showing up out of nowhere, no Nemesis tracking you down at every turn, and no worry about time running short. This two-disc set gives fans complete versions of the songs just as they are heard throughout the game. These are not symphonic versions, but instead the actual game music just as it was originally programmed. The track list may seem monumental; however many of the tracks are short segments of music clocking in at just a few seconds. Listeners will quickly identify tracks however, recalling what music goes with what scenes. Even the incidental music becomes strangely familiar. Most of the tone of the music is dreary and quite ambient. Many times it has a vague aura that resembles the Hellraiser scores composed by Christopher Young. However, this is a soundtrack from a survival horror game and the music reflects that brilliantly. Other tracks have a feeling of urgency and impending dread. These tracks may be the most familiar of all, as they were the ones that hammered into the eardrums of gamers as they attempted to do one thing: survive. For those that can read Japanese, or perhaps have someone to translate it for them, the CD also comes packaged with a 12-page booklet with comments from the soundtrack composers and series producer. Last Escape is the perfect thing to feed your nightmares late at night or quicken your pulse on a sleepless night. Currently available as an import-only title, there’s no telling when this horror will rear its ugly head to terrorize gamers across North America. -mike-
