No matter what direction you turn these days; the influence of
Napoleon Dynamite can be seen. If you walk into a Hot Topic in any
mall across America, you will see Vote for Pedro t-shirts, posters,
stickers, and nay other merchandise that can be created. Even a
televised spelling bee may have one of the participants quoting the
film, much to the surprise of dumbfounded announcers that have no idea
what the reference is and instead believe it to be a secret message. It
really isn't a surprise that Napoleon Dynamite has found its way
onto the PSP.
In case you've been living under a rock, Napoleon Dynamite has
become more than just pop culture and is in fact our main character. The
film follows the life of a high school student, Napoleon (Jon Heder) who
for lack of a better word, is really just a loser. But, although he's
been outcast by many, Napoleon shows that he has the skills to rise to
the occasion, even if just for a matter of minutes.
Everyone has either gone to or is currently in school with someone just
like Napoleon, and that's part of the humor here. I'm not talking about
the kids in the special class, though he certainly wouldn't be out of
his element. Napoleon is that kid with the tight Afro and classes who
dressed in clothing from the Goodwill that you used to beat up all the
time. He doesn't swear, seems to have too much time on his hands
worrying about mythical creatures and weapons for his own good, and his
family isn't any better.
Napoleon lives with his grandmother for reasons unexplained, though I
would guess his mother abandoned him and his brother Kip (Aaron Ruell)
after getting a prediction from a psychic at what their lives would be
like. Kip is just as bad as Napoleon, spending his days "chatting with
hot babes" on the Internet, practicing to be a cage fighter (or so he
claims) and generally showing just how pathetic he really is. But, their
grandmother gets in an accident after going out with her friends on some
quads and Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) comes to take care of them.
Rico is another guy that you know. He's the jock that's too busy living
in his past glory of high school football, a bit like Al Bundy, and is
trying to make money selling household products door-to-door, something
that Kip seems to be at home with as well. It may not seem like much of
a film, but there is much more to this story.
Napoleon meets Pedro (Efren Ramirez), a new Latino student and the two
become friends. With the student election coming up, Pedro decides that
he might run for president, but he has to contend with Summer, part of
the student bodies elite (and snobby) upper crust. This is where the
skills of a loser can pave the way for the future, with some laughs of
course.
There are a lot of people that think that Napoleon Dynamite is
one of the stupidest movies ever created, but honestly, just think about
some of the people from your school, or perhaps even a sibling, and you
will find the humor. As stated earlier, everyone knows someone like
this, and if you quote a line from the film with someone who has seen
it, laughter will ensue. Part of it is the voice, part the attitude of
someone, Napoleon, thinking that they are cool, and for the most part,
people just don't talk the way he does. Again, no profanity is found in
this movie, and I'm sure that has a great deal to do with the religious
producers of the film, but still, the film has laughs and plenty of
them. It could be Napoleon's mishap on Pedro's bike after taking it off
a sweet jump. Maybe it's his in-depth conversation on hunting
wolverines, or it could even be his amazing dance number towards the
film, but no matter what, the film is just funny.
So, you already have your PSP. Lucky. You've got yourself skills. You
know, racing skills, jumping skills, puzzle skills . . . . girls like a
guy with skills. You've been playing games for hours and now your thumbs
hurt real bad. What would you do in a situation like that? Simple, throw
in Napoleon Dynamite. There are quite a few must own games on the
PSP, but Napoleon Dynamite is a must own movie for the PSP. And
remember . . . . vote for Pedro.
